Brownsburg Police outline recruitment progress, approves three officers off probation

The Town of Brownsburg Police Commission on May 12 received an update on sworn recruitment and civilian hires and approved three officers’ removal from probationary status.

Assistant Chief Andrew Watts told the commission that 184 non‑experienced candidates were invited to physical and written testing; 41 showed for the physical agility portion and about 30 advanced to the written test. Interview panels then evaluated roughly 43 candidates over two days, and the top 10 were forwarded to background investigations. An additional 11 candidates were placed on an eligibility list to be tapped if any of the top 10 are disqualified. Watts said the department aims to present three conditional offers in June, if background checks proceed as expected.

The commission also approved Chief Joseph Grimes’ request to remove Officers Donna Davenport, Nathaniel Giblin and Austin Hyde from probationary status after they completed their probation on April 20, 2026. The motion to accept the removals was moved and seconded and passed by voice vote.

Separately, the commission was introduced to Steve Secor, who identified himself as the department’s incoming crime scene investigator. Secor told the commission he retired from the FBI after about 22 years and completed the final steps of his background process; staff said they will set a start date after processing is finalized.

Commissioners and staff acknowledged the difficulties of running large candidate boards and standardizing interviews, and they thanked members of the interview panels for their time. No additional personnel actions were taken at the meeting.

The commission’s next regularly scheduled meeting was not announced during the recorded portion of the meeting.
