Southwest Food Excellence (SFE), the district’s food-service management partner, briefed the board Tuesday on student engagement and menu changes that, the company said, helped boost participation in breakfast (about 14.6% over three years) and lunch (about 11%).
SFE speakers — including district-area resident manager Samara Khan and local general manager Kate Lewis — outlined a suite of initiatives: student surveys (paper and QR-code formats), on-site reviews required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, roving chef demonstrations, periodic Flavor Fest taste events, smoothies at the high school, and new waffle irons at two secondary sites. Beth King, the district’s food-service director, said the district allows unlimited fruits and vegetables and that some schools have fruit-and-vegetable bars.
SFE said it is using commodity purchases to reduce cost and has implemented competitive annual wage adjustments and retention incentives. The company reported passing a PDE audit last July with no findings and anticipated repeat review this July.
Administrators placed the SFE cost-reimbursable contract renewal (year 4 of 5) on the May 19 consent agenda; no final vote was taken Tuesday.
Why it matters: The district’s food program both affects student nutrition and represents a sizable operational contract; changes in participation and procurement affect reimbursement rates and budgeting. Board members asked clarifying questions about surveying logistics (e.g., QR codes for students who have phone restrictions) and how food allergies and nurse-directed accommodations are handled.
What’s next: The SFE renewal and related food-service consent items are scheduled for the May 19 board consent agenda.
