Commission hears council liaison update: budget process under way and solar rebates expanded to heat pumps and EV chargers

At the April 20 meeting the council liaison told the Sustainability Commission that the proposed city budget was presented at the prior council meeting and that the commission will receive budget updates at each meeting until the budget is adopted in June.

The liaison also reported that the council approved a resolution to expand the city’s solar-rebate program to include heat pumps and electric-vehicle chargers, describing the change as a council-level policy action that staff will need to publicize and implement. The liaison asked the commission to help get the word out once staff prepares outreach materials.

Separately, the liaison summarized takeaways from a recent Midwest climate summit in Cleveland, including municipal interest in microgrids and emerging guidance for responsible data centers; commissioners noted those topics as potential future agenda items.

No formal budget votes occurred in the commission meeting; the liaison’s update set expectations for ongoing budget reporting and outreach work related to the revised rebate program.
