Survivors seek accountability and downtown banking loss noted during Lewiston public comment

During public comment at the April 21 meeting, residents raised a mix of community concerns.

Cara Courchesne urged civility and respect for neurodivergent residents, saying Lewiston should be a place where people do not have to “shrink themselves to participate.” She thanked Councilor Harriman for speaking about autism and asked the council to avoid public shaming and to treat neighbors with dignity.

A survivor of the Oct. 25, 2023 mass shooting (self‑identified as Destiny) said survivors and victims’ families are still seeking accountability for how roughly $1.9 million in raised funds were distributed. Destiny said one nonprofit (the Root Cellar) reported returning funds to victims and asked the council to press the Maine Community Foundation to return remaining funds to families; councilors listened but did not take an action to initiate an investigation at the meeting.

Resident Christine Holden used final public comment to note that Androscoggin Bank will close its Lisbon Street branch this week, leaving downtown without a bank branch and expressing disappointment that ATMs and longstanding neighborhood banking services will be lost.

Ending: Councilors heard the concerns and directed staff and mayoral channels as appropriate; survivors’ requests for further review of fund allocations remain outstanding and may prompt follow‑up from the city or community advocates.
