Somerville’s Design Review Board granted final approval on April 23 to a pavilion proposed for the Ark Foundation, a local nonprofit that operates from the former Berlin G’s house.
Staff said the pavilion would normally be handled at staff level, but because it exceeds 400 square feet it required board review. Applicants described a modest backyard pavilion intended for programming and covered outdoor activity; exterior cladding was proposed as hardy plank and the applicant said an interior back wall would use reclaimed Berlin G’s bricks when feasible. The team explained they would add a small amount of concrete behind the pavilion to ensure safe, accessible circulation for Ark users.
The board moved and seconded final approval; the motion carried by voice vote. The board noted the project’s small scope, limited visibility from public streets and that landscaping or photometrics were not required for final approval given the pavilion’s backyard location.
Next steps: applicants may proceed to permit submittals consistent with the approved final design.
