Assembly discusses spring bear preparedness, public education and trash containment

PETERSBURG, Alaska — The Petersburg Borough Assembly used part of its April 20 meeting to discuss community preparedness for spring bear activity, focusing on prevention, public education and interagency coordination.

Assembly members and staff said the borough will continue an outreach campaign and distribution of bear straps to residents as the season begins. Public Works has piloted a small number of bear-proof containers, but shipping and per-unit costs limit broader distribution; staff said a single tested bear-proof can cost roughly $300 and freight raises total costs.

Police, fire and Fish & Game collaboration: Police and Fish & Game have worked together on habituated-bear incidents, and the police chief said Fish & Game authorized removal of certain habituated animals last year. Fire and public-works staff said they will request clearer guidance from Fish & Game on acceptable mitigation tactics and will coordinate any public messaging and potential grant applications for community containers.

What residents can do: Staff reiterated practical steps — using provided bear straps, securing attractants, and using Sanitation and Public Works services to drop off problem refuse when necessary. Assembly members discussed a concentrated annual education push (a local “bear week”) to remind residents and encourage use of available tools.

Next steps: Staff will continue to coordinate with Fish & Game on messaging and possible grants for containers, track distribution of bear straps and report back to the assembly on any recommended regulatory or operational steps.
