Animal shelter reports adoption gains; library seeks roof funding

At the start of the meeting the commission heard two community updates: a progress report on the Hancock County Animal Shelter and a presentation on library roof bids.

Laurianne Laurianne, identified in the transcript as director of operations for the Jefferson County Humane Society, reported the partnership with the county animal shelter has led to operational improvements in staff training, handling and marketing. "We've seen a 50% increase in K9 adoptions," she said, and added that the shelter has cut its length of stay in half and improved medical capacity through an on‑site vet and telemedicine support. Laurianne invited the public to an open house Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Janice McSherry of the Mary Hwir Public Library told commissioners the library (built in 1956 with a 1978 addition) has persistent roof leaks and has solicited bids. She said the library board received bids ranging about $200,000 (lowest) to $218,000 (highest) and plans to use roughly $24,000 in remaining levy funds to help with the project as the board finalizes a contractor selection.

Both presenters asked the commission to note the items for the record; the commission thanked them and moved on to other business.
