Del City highlights Neighbors Night Out, Armed Forces parade and student-led Rose Lane design project

Commissioners used their meeting to promote several upcoming community events and to describe a student-led design project for Rose Lane.

Joshua Schultz reminded residents that Neighbors Night Out will take place Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Del City Community Center, 4505 Southeast 15th Street, with food trucks, vendors and activities. The commission also previewed an Armed Forces Day parade on May 16, with Col. Cisco Harris, commander of Tinker Air Force Base, serving as grand marshal and a fireworks show scheduled later that evening at Bill Eisenhower.

Commissioners announced a nonprofit expo on Friday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the community center designed to connect residents with local nonprofits, state and federal agencies and businesses offering social services and volunteer opportunities.

Separately, the commission described a grant that funded architecture students to develop conceptual plans for Rose Lane — an area formerly used as a road and now a parking area near Honey Bee and Family Dollar. Commissioners said the students prepared several renderings and recommendations focused on walkability, green space and façade improvements; staff said the material could support future applications to ACOG and other grant programs to fund engineering, streetscaping and building improvements.

Commissioners said the Rose Lane effort aligns with items in Del City's comprehensive plan and noted a public presentation by the student team was scheduled the following day; staff said they would confirm whether that presentation would be open to the public.
