Council members raised public‑safety concerns about fireworks in light of drought conditions and discussed drone shows as an alternative for community events.
Multiple council members said illegal neighborhood fireworks and the drought increase the risk of fires and urged a coordinated education and enforcement campaign. Councilmember Medina said she will raise the issue at the Public Safety committee as well. Staff noted AuroraFest will include a drone show in June and that the city already has a planned public fireworks display for July.
Brian (PROS staff) told the committee staff will coordinate with Aurora Fire Rescue and Aurora Police Department and bring a presentation on options and education back to the committee for guidance. The goal is to evaluate alternatives (for example, drone shows) and expand outreach to discourage unsafe, unauthorized fireworks and reduce fire risk during a dry season.
Next steps: Staff committed to preparing a coordinated presentation with the fire department and police that outlines options, required approvals, and education strategies for residents ahead of July events.
