Hundreds join Oakland cleanup ahead of Earth Day; officials emphasize climate justice

Hundreds of volunteers gathered Saturday in Oakland for a citywide cleanup ahead of Earth Day, joined on-site by Mayor Barbara Lee, state officials and members of California Volunteers, organizers said.

The speaker also reviewed prior federal climate work, saying, "When I was in Congress, I led the effort to fund the Global Green Climate Fund," and connected that history to reasons for local emphasis on environmental justice and equity.

Organizers described the day as both a civic cleanup and a climate action day, highlighting volunteer labor and partnerships with state and local officials. The presenter said the activity was intended to improve neighborhood health and visibility for environmental equity initiatives.
