Traffic commission splits on signal removals: Shauno/Skird vote fails; Dman/Taylor signal to be removed

Commissioners considered staff and consultant findings on traffic signals deemed "unwarranted" at two locations.

For Shauno Avenue and Skird Street, staff presented a consultant report that said signals were not warranted; staff proposed replacing the signal with a pedestrian crossing. After a motion and discussion, the measure failed (the transcript records one "I oppose" and notes the motion did not carry).

Separately, staff recommended removing the signal at Dman and Taylor, citing reduced need following the 2016 41 project and noting the signal already operates on flashing red for 12 hours at night. Commissioners moved to convert that intersection to a three-way stop and remove the signal equipment; the motion passed.

Staff said the Shauno/Skird removal would be held until planned fall work when a hospital driveway change will take effect and that any future signal reconstruction would require showing the state that the connecting highway's operations would not be adversely affected.
