Travis Unified board opts for provisional appointment, schedules candidate interviews for June 9

The Travis Unified Governing Board voted during its May 1 workshop to use the provisional appointment process to fill the vacancy created by the May 1 resignation of trustee Manuela Galvin rather than call a special election. The board approved inviting applicants and conducting public interviews at its June 9, 2026, meeting.

Superintendent Tiffany Benson and staff confirmed that if no viable applicants come forward by the interview date, the board may defer and pursue the regular election process; staff noted additional procedural filings may be required if the board delays filling the seat.

Trustees appointed an ad hoc committee of two board members to review applicant eligibility (residency and age) prior to interviews. Trustees Brenda and Matt agreed to serve on that eligibility committee and indicated the committee may meet virtually to verify applicants' qualifications. The board also agreed to ask applicants to submit bios and supporting materials in advance and to hold public interviews with each applicant permitted a short presentation and a question period.

In separate but related board business, trustees elected Suzanne to serve as board clerk through the first meeting in December 2026. The clerk election passed by voice vote during the May 1 session.

No candidate was appointed at the May 1 workshop; the public interview date and the appointment method were approved so that the board can lawfully fill the vacancy before the next regular election cycle.
