Justice courts emphasize outreach, veterans services and school partnerships in budget presentations

Judges from the county’s four justice courts told supervisors their courts are the entry point for most residents who interact with the legal system and outlined outreach and modest facility requests to preserve service access.

Flagstaff Justice Court noted it consistently ranks among the state's highest‑volume justice courts and has handled one of the state’s busiest dockets; leaders described staffing and recruitment challenges and recent phone‑system and courtroom audio upgrades to manage call volumes and public demand.

Fredonia Justice Court requested courthouse remodeling to add workspace for staff, size the courtroom better for jurors and provide a secure file access area; the manager recommended partial funding for the remodel from general funds and special revenue as shown in the FY27 packet.

Page Justice Court asked for signage and entry improvements to clarify the public entrance and improve security; Williams Justice Court highlighted community education (judge‑for‑a‑school tie‑ins), veterans outreach, and internship pipelines from local schools and colleges.

Why it matters: Justice courts handle high volumes of misdemeanor and civil matters and provide the county’s most frequent in‑person access point to the justice system. Modest facility and administrative investments can improve public service and reduce staff time lost to inefficient workflows.

Board response: Supervisors thanked judges for outreach efforts, praised successful Justice Bus events, and agreed to consider the modest capital and signage requests in the FY27 package.
