Planning official: five-year comprehensive plan draft delivered, will undergo planning commission and public review

A planning official told the Bedford County Courthouse and Property Committee that the county’s final draft comprehensive plan — the product of a five-year effort — was delivered at 3:45 p.m. that day and will enter a multi-step review process.

The official said the planning commission will review the plan one element at a time, make recommendations for additions, deletions or modifications, and then the county will hold multiple public meetings at varied times so residents can provide similar, parliamentary feedback. “Once uh my goal is not to amend or edit the plan one iota until we get done with both the planning commission's section and the public section,” the planning official said.

After the planning commission incorporates the public’s input and issues final recommendations, the official said the plan will return for the planning commission’s final decision and then be presented to the county commission; county commissioners are not required to adopt the plan and may choose whether to add accountability measures or other edits. The committee did not take a formal vote on the draft during the meeting.

Committee members did not raise objections on the record during the presentation; the planning official emphasized public outreach will be scheduled to maximize participation. No funding decisions or implementation timelines were announced at the meeting.
