The Mobile City Council voted to lay over demolition orders for several properties for 60 days after owners and residents asked for more time to secure buyers, permits or to remove personal effects.
At the public hearing on proposed nuisance declarations, Reginald Chambliss, who said he represents 1163 and 1167 Texas Street, asked the council not to tear down homes his family built and said he had found a buyer for one property. “I would ask and appreciate that if the council would grant us that privilege to do so,” Chambliss said, asking for 60 days to complete a sale and address sentimental items.
The council also heard from Theodore Williams, the resident at 613 Ruth Street, who said he has been on sick leave and is working to clean and present the property for repair or dignified demolition. “I want to get some additional time,” Williams said, describing health and logistical barriers to immediate compliance.
Property owner Alex Calvio asked for 30 days to obtain an engineer’s stamp for a permit; the council granted the owner 60 days. Councilmembers who responded acknowledged the sentimental and logistical concerns but also noted longstanding blight issues in affected neighborhoods. Councilwoman Ingram recommended a 60‑day extension based on the information provided.
After motions and a voice vote, the council laid the demolition items over for 60 days. The motion appears in the meeting record and is reflected in the council’s roll call: “All in favor? Aye. All opposed? I'll lay it over for 60 days.”
The council did not detail a post‑delay check or enforcement schedule on the record; staff or owners will need to report progress to the City Clerk or relevant department before the 60‑day period ends.
The delay affects structures listed for demolition at 613 Ruth Street, 1163 and 1167 Texas Street, and 2513 Kerrigan Drive. Owners who received extensions said they will pursue sales, repairs or permits during the extended period.
