Loretta Swanson, Public Works utilities and waste management director, and Mike Collins, county engineer, told commissioners they are ready to set a public hearing for June 9 to adopt the final assessment roll for the Shetland Road Improvement District (RID), accept the roadway into the county road log and set a speed limit.
The packet contains detailed assessment materials, and staff said they are available to answer commissioner questions about the assessment roll and the proposed speed limit. Commissioners agreed to proceed and noted the road requires substantial work.
In a separate but related discussion on road safety, staff reviewed recent requests for speed‑limit changes, object markers and chevrons and described a pilot to place reflective "white buttons" on fog lines where shoulders are wide enough; staff cautioned that object markers are for bridge and guardrail ends (not driveways) and outlined maintenance responsibilities for donated items such as solar speed display signs.
Next steps: Staff will place the Shetland RID hearing on the board calendar for June 9 and continue evaluating requested safety mitigations, returning recommended actions and cost estimates to the board as appropriate.
