Tom Rose of the town of Smyrna said the Front Street traffic calming and downtown beautification project will resume on April 20, covering Front Street between Division Street and College Street and aiming to improve pedestrian safety.
The project will install 14 high-visibility crosswalks "using stamped red concrete with bold white bars," Rose said, and will add three raised speed-table crossings at Division, Wright and College streets to slow vehicles in busy pedestrian areas. "At Division, Wright, and College streets, three crossings will be raised speed tables, proven to slow vehicles in busy pedestrian areas," he said.
Rose said a new center median will visually narrow the roadway to encourage slower driving and that six crosswalks are already completed. "Weather permitting, the remaining work will wrap up in about 5 weeks," he said, and work will be done in phases to maintain access to parking, sidewalks and local businesses whenever possible.
After construction, the town plans to add new signage and convert key intersections to three-way stops to further improve safety. "Traffic calming measures like these help drivers stay aware, reduce speeds, and create a safer, more predictable environment," Rose said.
For the latest information and an interactive project map, Rose directed the public to townofsmyrna.org and invited questions to the Public Works Department. The announcement described scheduling and design details but included no formal votes or regulatory citations.
