The Lyons Township High School District 204 board voted to adopt the Professional Appraisal Oversight Committee's recommendation to remove the student‑growth component from certified staff evaluations, effective for the 2026–27 evaluation cycle.
Mr. Petros introduced the PAOC proposal, explaining the committee of administrators and association representatives had voted unanimously in favor of the change after review. He said the move aligns district practice with a state law change effective July 1, 2025, that eliminated the mandate to factor student growth into evaluations.
Andrew Johannes, representing association perspectives, told the board that student‑growth measures had not meaningfully affected overall teacher ratings at LTHS and that the component had become administratively burdensome. "Removing these from the formal evaluation allows teachers to focus more on the instructional use of these tools rather than the compliance aspect," he said.
Administrators emphasized that the change does not remove assessment or data from instruction. Instead, assessments will continue to be used within the Danielson framework (particularly Domain 3, "Using Assessment in Instruction") to guide teaching and improvement. "While student growth will no longer be directly factored into a teacher's final summative rating, our commitment to using data to improve student outcomes remains firm," an administration representative said.
The board moved, seconded and approved the recommendation by roll call. The minutes show a unanimous board vote among members present. The change will be implemented in the district's evaluation procedures for the next school year; the administration said it will continue to refine common assessments and supports for instruction at the course‑team and PLC level.
What comes next: the administration and the association will continue working through implementation details, including how course teams use common assessments to inform instruction without a formal growth metric tied to summative ratings.
