Legislator Peters told the committee that the Veterans Reintegration Center in Saugerties recently closed after severe facility damage. Deputy Executive Amenta reported that during a recent storm a section of the roof collapsed and inspections found extensive mold and interior contamination; she said the building "is roughly found to be a loss" and that food, clothing donations and pantry supplies were ruined by mold.
Amenta said county staff and the VRC board are exploring alternative spaces including county-owned properties and private rentals, and that several essential programs are continuing at alternate locations (local legions, libraries and the Trudy Center in Ellenville). The county's Veterans Services Agency was notified immediately and has been assisting with continuity of services; Amenta said an emergency board meeting is scheduled and the county will invite Director Casapoli to give an update at the next legislative meeting.
Why it matters: The center provided key veteran services, a food pantry and storage for donated clothing. County officials said they are prioritizing immediate needs (food pantry continuation and program continuity) but that long-term decisions about rebuilding or relocating will depend on board decisions and property availability.
Ending: The committee requested an update from Director Casapoli at the next meeting and county staff continue to work with the VRC board to identify an interim location and long-term options.
