The Los Angeles City Council on April 17 recognized the achievements of local high school athletic teams from San Pedro and Sylmar.
Councilmember T. McOsker introduced San Pedro athletes, applauding the CIF City Division 1 girls water polo champions and the back‑to‑back Marine League boys basketball champions. Coach Stephanie Cuevas and student captains addressed the chamber; captain Calia said the championship "is more than a win," calling it a historic moment for girls' athletics in the community. Tim McOsker presented plaques to the teams.
Later presentations honored Sylmar High School's 2026 CIF City Section 2 boys basketball champions and invited the school's cheer team to perform in the chamber. Councilmember M. Rodriguez and school principal Rodney Wright emphasized the teams' discipline and community support. Principal Wright noted the team's run to the state championship game and described the victory as a point of pride for the north valley.
Councilmembers encouraged students to use city resources and to continue civic engagement; several councilmembers took part in photo opportunities with the teams.
Ending: The recognitions were ceremonial; no legislative or fiscal action accompanied the presentations.
