County staff reported a decline in sales‑tax receipts that commissioners said could affect the 2018 budget.
The chair said October figures (based on August sales) were again down about $15,000, and staff noted the county is down about $155,000 year‑to‑date compared with the prior year. "If you look at the year to date, you know, we're down about, on the countywide sales tax... about a $155,000 for the year," staff said. The jail sales tax—used to service jail bonds—was identified separately and reported as down roughly $175,000 year‑to‑date.
Commissioners expressed concern about the unexpected loss of a major retailer and whether local action could influence national retail decisions. One commissioner suggested outreach with the chamber of commerce to try to improve local sales‑tax performance, but staff said many decisions are driven by national retailers and may be beyond local control.
Staff also reminded the public of operational items: county offices will observe Veterans Day closures and the landfill office schedule was clarified so residents know when the landfill will accept material.
Next steps: commissioners agreed to monitor sales‑tax performance and consider outreach with business groups; staff will continue monthly reporting to the commission.
