Board adopts district initial proposals for 2026–27 contract reopeners with teachers after public hearing

The East Side Union High School District board on April 16 opened a public hearing and then adopted the district’s initial proposal for contract reopeners for the 2026–27 school year submitted to the East Side Teachers Association (ESTA).

The board opened item 9.01 for public testimony (three calls for speakers) and closed the hearing after hearing from invited speakers. On item 9.02 trustees moved, seconded and voted to adopt the district’s initial proposal for reopeners to ESTA; the motion carried with roll‑call affirmations. Board members noted that item 9.03 (the teachers’ initial proposal) was received by the board as required and did not require a motion to 'receive.'

Adoptions at this stage constitute the district’s initial negotiating position and do not represent a final agreement; they set the framework for bargaining with the union. The board made a procedural record that public testimony was received and that the initial proposal will be used in negotiations with ESTA during upcoming bargaining sessions.

The board did not disclose detailed contract terms in open session beyond stating that the proposals were filed for the 2026–27 reopeners. Any subsequent tentative agreements or ratifications would be returned to the board in accordance with district and legal procedures.
