Gardner youth center reports rising membership; council refers March report to file

A staff member reported the March update for the Gardner Community Youth Center to the council on April 17, saying state representative John Zotnik secured $100,000 for the coming year and that the center has seen steady membership growth.

The presenter said registered unique visitors averaged roughly 55 in March (up from 45 in February), and described renewed programming — including a podcast studio, a growing 3D-printing club and a well-attended board-game event that included local police officers. The center plans April-vacation programming and a community clean-up on Elm Street during the "Keep Gardner Beautiful" event.

Staffing changes include hiring three youth "change makers" (teen staff) through a partnership with Project Heel and support from the Heel Collaborative. The presenter credited Project Heel and local coordinator Miranda Jennings for help hiring and supporting the program.

Councilor Brook moved and Councilor Harden seconded a motion to refer item 11794 (the March youth-center report) to the city council to be placed on file. The motion carried after an oral record of at least one opposed vote; the meeting then moved to adjournment.
