During the patron‑comment period on April 16, several residents and parents urged Francis Howell’s Board of Education to act on bullying and student safety concerns.
Chris Bedwell, speaking for his family, recounted a series of incidents across three district schools involving his children: a reported credible gun threat at Francis Howell North, repeated harassment and physical confrontations at Bryan Middle School, and an unaddressed physical attack at Central Elementary. Bedwell said that no consistent discipline followed his reports and asked the board to adopt a clear, consistent, ‘‘zero tolerance’’ approach rooted in student safety and meaningful parent communication.
Board response and next steps: board members acknowledged the complaint and asked administration to expedite a direct response to the parent. Several directors emphasized the emotional weight of the testimony and requested the administration provide the family and the board with follow‑up information about investigations and corrective steps.
Other public comments touched on curriculum updates, a revived resolution on racism, and community volunteer involvement; several speakers also urged vigilance on state proposals that could change election timing for school boards.
