Residents at ‘the jungle’ tell San Jose committee housing promises were broken; city asked to delay clearings

Multiple speakers in the open‑forum portion of the meeting urged the committee to address recent encampment clearings and alleged broken housing promises.

A speaker who was introduced in the roll call of public commenters as "Batman" said people at the site were being swept despite having been told housing was available: "People who were told that they were getting offered housing are now not apparently being offered that, or that offer has been revoked or changed," the speaker said. Another commenter described family members who received conflicting messages from caseworkers and said people were being sent to a location called "Tent City" instead of tiny homes they had expected.

Several residents said belongings were taken during sweeps and described anxiety and confusion about their official status in housing placement lists. One commenter who identified herself as Crystal said she lost many items and called the process "unfair." Advocates asked Council Member Doan and others to meet with residents after the meeting to clarify status and help resolve placement and language‑access problems.

Committee members did not take action during the public comment period; the meeting adjourned after the remarks.
