Meridian School Board starts vacancy appointment process and approves three policies in second reading

The Meridian School Board opened a public process to fill a trustee vacancy following Director Gray’s resignation and completed several routine policy votes.

Staff described the vacancy process under Policy 11:15: the district will solicit applicants from the vacant director district; the board must choose an appointee with the agreement of three directors within 90 days, and if the board cannot agree the Educational Service District (ESD) may step in to facilitate the appointment. Administrators clarified that an appointee must be a resident of the director district and that the ESD role does not change the residency requirement.

Board members asked procedural questions about posting timelines, interview questions and whether the appointment requires a public interview and vote; staff confirmed interviews and the appointment vote occur in public meeting.

In routine business the board held second readings and took voice votes to adopt policy and procedures 3417 (catheterization), 3424 (opioid-related overdose reversal), and 6605 (student safety walking, biking and bus riding). Each motion carried on voice vote; the board chair announced the approvals.

The board also completed reorganizational actions earlier in the meeting: nominations and roll-call approvals for board vice president (Michelle Simmons) and legislative board representative (Shana) were accepted as unanimous.
