Interim principal outlines vision, student leadership and arts at Sheltonham Elementary

At the April 14 board meeting Mrs. Nelson, introduced as the interim principal at Sheltonham Elementary, presented her vision for the school and highlighted early programs she has supported since arriving two weeks earlier.

Mrs. Nelson said her vision centers on a “vibrant community where every child comes to learn, work, and play in a warm, caring, and inclusive environment.” She described initiatives already underway: a fifth‑grade student council, a junior Playworks coach pilot to train fourth graders to support K–2 recess, mentoring partnerships that pair older students with younger classes, and planned visits from therapy dogs.

Two students — Miles Henry and Ava Alexis — spoke to the board about their experiences at Sheltonham Elementary, praising robotics, STEM, band, stage crew, and school rewards like “dolphin dollars.” The board also heard a written statement from art teacher Miss Pelish describing an art display featuring student drawings, paintings, collages and sculptures.

Mrs. Nelson noted there are close to 80 staff members in the building and said she is focused on leveraging that expertise through professional learning and leadership development. She invited board members to visit the school and to engage with students and staff as part of ongoing community partnerships.

What’s next: Mrs. Nelson said she will return with updates as programs mature and recommended the board view the student artwork on display at the district office.
