Council committee advances $105,000 playground renovation request after divided debate and calls for site visit

The City & Safety Services Committee voted to advance a request to appropriate and authorize up to $105,000 for renovation of a playground at the community center, after intense debate about necessity and scope.

Staff said the equipment is aging and there is subsidence in part of the play area; members asked for further detail from the department director. Member Alan Swank, who visited the site, challenged the assertion that the equipment needed replacement and asked for clearer justification, photos and a plan for where funds would be spent. Another council member asked that the committee also consider the more heavily used playground between the rec center and pool as a budget priority.

The committee chose to move the item to first reading next week and requested that Director Katherine Ann Jordan appear at that meeting to provide further detail; several members also recommended an on-site visit before further action.

Procedure: The motion to advance passed by voice vote with recorded opposition from at least one member. The item will return to council for first reading and further public discussion.
