During the public-comment portion of Tuesday’s Charles City Comm School District meeting, longtime district educator Jesse White urged the board to address rapidly rising employee family health-insurance costs and to consider short-term financial support for staff.
“My wife has received medical care through Mayo Clinic for the past 15 years… We rely on the insurance plan that allows her to continue seeing the doctors who know her medical history,” White said. He described a sharp increase in family-insurance premiums: “Just a few years ago, family insurance in this district cost under $400 per month. It rose to $950 per month, and now it’s projected to exceed — excuse me — $1,850 per month.”
White also told the board the district was holding roughly 35% in unspent funds — “nearly $7,000,000,” he said — and asked the board to revisit a proposed employee cost increase. “I’m asking the board to revisit the proposal and consider a temporary monthly stipend or additional support to help offset part of this increase while a better long-term solution is developed for the following year and beyond,” he said.
White warned that experienced educators were actively considering leaving because of the financial pressure and urged the board to act to retain staff. Board members thanked the speaker; the board did not take immediate action on the request during the meeting.
