District staff presented first readings of several policy updates after the legislative session, including revisions on firearms, wellness, technology use, and a new wireless-communication-device policy that the state requires the district to adopt.
Staff member (Speaker 6) explained the district must adopt one of two state-allowed approaches: a full ban on wireless devices at school or a policy that permits devices to be on-site but turned off and stored during the school day. "According to the law, we have to approve one of two policies," staff said. The policy text the administration recommended aligns closely with guidance from the Indiana School Boards Association.
Chair (Speaker 2) pushed back on the recommended approach, saying, "I'd rather have the kids have their phones on them at all time." Staff responded that the state does not permit that option and clarified the policy language includes smartwatches if they are linked to a wireless device. "That has to be turned off, not on their person," staff said when describing allowable storage options such as backpacks or designated pockets.
The item was presented as a first reading and informational only; staff said they will incorporate feedback and return with recommended language so families can be prepared before the school year begins.
Next steps: administration will draft final policy language for board consideration at a future meeting before the start of the school year.
