Parents say bomb-threat notification lagged; board hears requests for clearer safety communications

Several parents and community members used public comment time to press the Dover Area School District for clearer emergency communication after a recent bomb threat.

A parent who spoke during the meeting said her children were at school the day the threat occurred but the district’s mass notification system did not send texts or calls until later that evening. “My kids then came home, told us about it. We were not notified until later in the evening,” the parent said, adding she contacted the resource officer and was later told K‑9s had searched the facility and that no device was found.

Board members and administrators acknowledged the concern and said they would provide a fuller timeline and follow-up to the speaker. The district’s resource officer and safety staff were referenced repeatedly during the exchange; administration offered to deliver more detailed incident timelines to the parent by email and to review the school’s ICE (In Case of Emergency) protocols and broader notification procedures.

Public speakers also urged the board to improve the district’s approach to student safety and to consider additional resources such as federal surplus programs and cross-agency partnerships for secure equipment.

What’s next: Administrators said they would follow up directly with the family and review notification and safety protocols; board members asked staff to bring additional information at the next meeting.
