Trustees approved $2,350 from the current‑year contingency to underwrite a July 25 community program that will feature historical reenactors, a professional storyteller and a partnership with local historical groups and the fairgrounds.
Mayor Bass described a two‑hour historical program at the Beekman Arms lawn featuring reenactors from the New York Fifth Regiment, period music, a storyteller (Jonathan Krook) and displays provided by the Dutchess County Historical Society. Food and fireworks elements will be financed or sponsored by other organizations; the board was asked to cover reenactor and storyteller fees ($1,700 and $650 respectively).
Trustee Lydia moved to separate the two requests and remove reenactors from the village‑funded portion, arguing taxpayer funds should not underwrite war reenactments and that historical context and inclusion should be emphasized. Trustee Elanor raised concerns about the Declaration of Independence’s exclusions and urged balanced programming. Supporters, including trustees who have reenactment experience and other board members, said reenactors and storytellers provide educational context and pledged to work with the historical society to ensure inclusive programming.
The board first voted down the amendment to split funding. On final motion, the board approved the $2,350 expenditure from the contingency fund. The mayor and staff said they will continue to seek sponsorships and asked staff to report any external funding that reduces the use of contingency funds.
