A board presenter identified as Lyn summarized discussions with county attorney Nick Christensen about the county's private acts. Lyn said the two items—previously enacted as Private Chapter 65 and later amended as Private Chapter 6—could be combined and rewritten to make the language flow and to correct inaccuracies that no longer reflect current practice.
Lyn described the suggested process: draft the combined language, present it to the steering committee for approval, then send it to the full Rutherford County Commission where a two-thirds vote would be required before the measure would proceed to the General Assembly for final action. Lyn said there was no immediate urgency to complete the work.
"There's no way this is happening before February, March of next year," a committee member interjected, citing legislative timing and the general assembly calendar. Board members agreed that the timing and the upcoming local election—after which a new mayor would chair this board—make it appropriate to pause formal drafting now and resume work later in the year.
The board asked staff to calendar continued discussion of the private-act cleanup for the June meeting so members can review proposed drafts and allow new leadership an opportunity to provide input.
No formal vote or ordinance was adopted at the meeting; the discussion was informational and resulted in scheduling follow-up.
