Mecklenburg supervisors confirm local emergency, extend burn restrictions amid high fire risk

Mecklenburg County staff asked the board to confirm an emergency declaration and extend restrictions on open burning after a series of recent windy, dry days raised the risk of wildfire and strained emergency resources.

Alex (county administrator) told the board the county had issued a local ban to extend and supplement existing Virginia restrictions on open burning and that under the county's emergency law the board needed to confirm the declaration. "The emergency will remain in place until some future date in time, which we don't know at this point," Alex said, citing ongoing hot, dry weather.

Supervisors moved to adopt the confirmation. The motion carried on a voice vote.

Staff asked that the public heed the ban and to watch for a formal notice; several supervisors urged that the burn-ban notice be prominently published in local media so residents and farmers see it.

What happens next: The locally confirmed emergency will remain in effect until staff or the board determines conditions have improved; staff will publish notices about the restrictions and enforcement.
