Sterling Heights presented a multi‑year road and sidewalk plan that city engineers described as one of the busiest in recent years, with multiple major projects planned across 2026–2028 and a strong emphasis on safety and non‑motorized connections.
The 2026 program includes projects such as a resurfacing and signal modernization corridor, a bridge rehab on Shainer Road (with new pedestrian sidewalks), targeted resurfacing on 17‑mile and other collectors, and a substantial Clinton River Road project with underground infrastructure work. City engineers said local and federal grant applications are being pursued for reconstruction and that several projects will incorporate signal and crosswalk modernizations and a 10‑foot shared‑use trail in key segments.
For 2027 the city expects another large set of projects with full‑depth pavement reconstruction on some corridors, completion of sidewalk gaps (including Clinton River Road and 15‑mile corridors), multiple midblock crossing installations with push‑button RFB signals and added median islands for traffic calming. Engineering staff committed to working with parks staff on project sequencing so park openings are paired with accessible roadways and sidewalks; council requested additional analyses on bike‑lane feasibility for Clinton River Road and the cost/benefit of adding sidewalks when paving gravel roads.
City engineers said they will return with further detail on project phasing, right‑of‑way and easement needs, and cost estimates where council asked for trade‑off options.
