The ABC Unified School District board on April 16 introduced Mike Lawrence as the district’s new director of information and technology. Superintendent Dr. Zillo said Lawrence brings experience as a teacher, administrator and leader in educational-technology organizations and praised his work with computer-using-educators and statewide programs.
“I'm very honored to join the team at ABC Unified leading the information and technology department,” Lawrence said, adding that he plans to visit every school site before the end of the year with members of his IT team and to coordinate closely with academic services so technology supports student learning.
Dr. Zillo highlighted Lawrence’s background with technology education standards and student media festivals, and board members expressed enthusiasm. Board member Dr. Rios said the district can “anticipate a lot of opportunities” with Lawrence’s experience and urged the board to provide an environment where he can thrive.
Lawrence said he values combining instructional technology and information technology under one department and described a student-centered approach: “I look forward to supporting students as they flourish as innovative thinkers, effective communicators and collaborative global learners.”
The board’s introduction was followed by brief questions from trustees about his reasons for joining ABC Unified; Lawrence said he grew up nearby, wanted to apply lessons learned from prior roles directly to students and appreciated the district’s structure that places tech under academic services.
No formal vote was required for the introduction; the item was presented as an announcement and personnel introduction. The district will continue onboarding and site visits as part of his transition into the role.
