The ABC Unified School District board on April 16 recognized the migrant education speech and debate team for winning first place in a regional competition on March 16. Interim migrant education coordinator Jose Carlos Saragosa said the team — composed of students from several schools including Hasell Middle, Fetti and ABC Virtual Academy — will compete at the state championship in Monterey on May 3.
Student speakers described what the program taught them about evidence and public speaking. "The most important understanding that we have gained is that all claims must have evidence from credible sources," a student representative said, urging board members to ask for credible sources when evaluating claims.
The board and staff presented certificates; Saragosa noted the district had also received recognition from the office of Congresswoman Michelle Steel. Several trustees praised the students’ poise and preparation, and the board took group photos and presented awards to the students and coach.
The recognition was presented as an awards item; no formal board action was required. Students and staff said they appreciated district support and thanked coaches and coordinators for their work preparing the team for state competition.
