County staff presented a draft list of legislative priorities compiled by the commission's legislative committee and asked for approval so staff could begin advocacy and coordination with the North Dakota Association of Counties. Commissioners debated which items to push directly and whether the county should lead lobbying on major items such as correctional-center funding.
Following discussion, the commission voted to approve the priorities with the local correctional center (jail funding) removed from the county’s lead priorities. Commissioners said they were willing to support association-led efforts on correctional issues but not to take the lead.
The board then debated whether to explicitly include Grand Sky infrastructure support in the county’s priorities. Because one commissioner identified a potential conflict, the board moved to recuse that member from the Grand Sky vote. After recusal, the commission voted to include support for Grand Sky (described in meeting discussion as enhanced-use-lease infrastructure dollars) in its legislative priorities.
Staff said ND Association of Counties staff would be in town to receive and coordinate priorities and that the action would allow the county to be on record with its priorities as legislative session planning continues.
