Pembroke School Panel Keeps Calendar, Weighs Good Friday Move and Scheduling Constraints

Superintendent Erin told the Pembroke School Committee on March 17 that Massachusetts law requires schools to schedule 180 instructional days plus five inclement-weather days, and that the districts published calendar has always been built to meet that requirement. "By law, we are required to schedule for 180 school days plus five inclement weather days," she said, explaining why reopening this years calendar to convert Good Friday (April 3) into a student day would be difficult for staff and families.

Committee members described the practical problems staff raised: the high school traditionally uses the final day for exam makeups and the elementary promotion schedule requires a short last day; several staff could request religious leave if Good Friday were changed to a work day; and contractual and state rules limit extending the school year beyond certain dates. Members also noted community complaints about camps and family plans already scheduled for the proposed Monday last-day-of-school previously discussed in the public comments.

Administration said it will not send truant officers to students who miss the final short day but urged families to follow the printed calendar. The committee did not place a formal vote on the agenda; the superintendent said the item could be scheduled as a voting matter at the committees request. Several members asked that a draft of any calendar revisions be posted for public review and emphasized that emergency weather days could still shift the year later into June.
