Assembly member to hold public meetings and rebrand transit-supportive ordinance before fall hearing

Assembly member Erin told the Rules Committee on March 12 that she will lead a public outreach series focused on housing supply and the currently named "transit-supportive development overlay" ordinance.

"I'm going to be hosting a series of conversations, public meetings in the community in April, March and April," Erin said, describing plans to use those meetings to explain how Anchorage arrived at current housing conditions, the policy levers available and to solicit input.

Erin said she intends to rebrand the ordinance to make its goals clearer. "I do intend to change the name of the ordinance to make it much more clear as to what it is we are trying to accomplish rather than the planning tool that we are using to accomplish it," she said, adding the change is meant to reduce confusion and increase transparency.

She described a lengthy timeline: outreach through spring, introduction of the ordinance after that work, and a public hearing set for the fall to allow an extended public comment period. Erin said she expects only minor substantive changes from the most recent version recommended by the Planning and Zoning Commission and does not anticipate re-referral to that commission for a new review.

Members expressed interest in the public engagement plan and asked for clarity on next steps; Erin said the rebranding and outreach are designed to ensure the public understands trade-offs before legislative action.
