HPC prioritizes opening Thompson House, reviews inspection and 2027 budget planning

Members of the Carbondale Historic Preservation Commission agreed that getting the Thompson House open to the public should be a near-term priority and discussed next steps for inspection follow-up and budgeting.

A commissioner said, "getting the Thompson House opened up and ready for public I think our first priority," and staff reported that Chris Thompson completed a walkthrough and sent findings in writing to staff and other reviewers. Commissioners said the building inspector, staff (Jared), and interested members will review Thompson’s written notes and determine necessary repairs or further assessment.

Commissioners discussed funding strategies, including applying for grants, and noted that setting aside budget needs for 2027 would help keep the project on track. One member said additional surveys (for log cabins and other older properties) are likely to be a follow-up effort and may be timed for the next grant window. No formal motion to appropriate funds was recorded during the meeting; the conversation focused on planning and outreach to trustees and staff to identify funding opportunities.

The commission expects to raise the Thompson House priorities and suggested budget needs at an upcoming work session with the Board of Trustees on April 21 to gather direction and to coordinate potential grant applications.
