Commission previews April exhibits, Worth Lake Park opening and MLK event plans

Commissioners used part of the April 6 meeting to preview upcoming community arts events and outreach efforts.

They confirmed a rotating exhibit reception on April 20 (5–7 p.m.) featuring the Korean‑American Artist Association and said performers would include traditional mask‑dance instruction, cellist and keyboard performers, and other cultural presentations. Staff described ongoing workshops where a visiting master performer is teaching students, and commissioners discussed plans to seek the performer for future events if funding permits.

The commission also reviewed plans for the Worth Lake Park grand opening (April 25), where wrapped signal boxes will be displayed, volunteers may lead origami crane activities, and family‑oriented events (bike raffles, bird walks, and free hot dogs) are planned. Commissioners asked for volunteer support to staff the arts commission table during the festivities.

Finally, members reported on MLK event planning: a meeting with Black community elders and youth council members produced recommendations to increase student art, spoken‑word opportunities and youth performance slots at future MLK commemorations; the commission said Pierce College will host next year’s event and that the youth council’s input will shape programming going forward.

Staff were asked to circulate event details and to coordinate performers, volunteers and logistics for the upcoming dates.
