Resident urges stop sign at crash-prone East 5th & Caswell; council recognizes new paramedic and proclaims Child Abuse Prevention Month

Nathan Colvin, who lives near the intersection of East 5th and Caswell Street, told the council he had witnessed another collision there and said crashes at the intersection are frequent. “I believe that the yield sign should be changed to a stop sign,” Colvin said, asking the council to consider the change to improve safety for children and neighbors.

Mayor Clinton Morris thanked Colvin and said staff would look into the request and provide numbers and follow-up. The council did not take an immediate action during the meeting; staff indicated they would be in touch.

Earlier in the meeting, Chief Scheidle introduced Olivia Cooper as a newly assigned paramedic working through the city’s EMS contract with Metro. The chief presented Cooper with a certificate of assignment and a challenge coin; Cooper thanked the department.

The council also read and presented a proclamation recognizing April as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. Judge Rob Tobin, Amy Gallinal and other partners outlined planned awareness events including Hands Around the Park at Big Thunder Park and scheduled remarks by local judges and the State’s Attorney’s Office. City staff said blue ribbons would be distributed at city offices and fire stations to raise awareness for the month.
