Commission seeks more engineering detail before moving forward with Central Island injection wells

Commissioner Joseph questioned the city’s Central Island drainage approach after staff disclosed nearly $800,000 had been spent on prior fixes and asked whether pervious concrete or injection wells would function during high tides.

Staff and engineering representatives explained injection wells are drilled into lower aquifer zones below the saturated layer and must be designed and permitted by multiple agencies (city engineers, Miami‑Dade, Florida DEP). Staff said the project remains in design and permitting and that firm cost estimates and timelines are not yet available. The city manager reminded commissioners that the injection‑well alternative was chosen previously over a $56 million pump station option as part of a multi‑agency planning process.

Commissioners asked for a briefing from the city engineer and the design team, expressed interest in meeting with engineers individually to review details, and requested clarity on costs and the permitting timeline before committing further funds.
