Committee clears way for Wabanaki Veterans Memorial fundraising at Broad Street Park

Parks and Recreation Director Tracy Willette briefed the Government Operations Committee on a request from a Wabanaki Veterans Memorial group to locate a memorial in Broad Street Park. Willette said staff recommended the location as appropriate for visitors and parking, and that the group has gone to the Cultural Commission and met with the Downtown Partnership.

Willette said the group needs location confirmation to begin fundraising; he noted that the city is not being asked to commit tax dollars for the memorial. Committee members asked questions about the site and confirmed they were comfortable allowing the group to move forward with fundraising and design work at Broad Street Park.

Next steps: staff will inform the group that the committee supports proceeding with fundraising and design work for the memorial at the proposed Broad Street Park site; any formal park modifications or installations will be subject to later approvals as required.
