EMA warns of recurring siren failures, readies estimates ahead of active tornado season

Ross County Emergency Management reported to commissioners that tornado season is arriving and that repeated repairs to a local outdoor warning siren have not permanently solved the problem.

EMA staff said three tornado touchdowns and straight-line winds had affected nearby counties earlier in the month, and described the Massieville/Hollville siren as a recurring problem. The EMA presentation said crews had spent about $20,000 over the last two years attempting repairs but the siren continues to fail intermittently; staff recommended getting estimates for a full system overhaul ahead of the coming months and will present cost estimates to the board.

EMA also reported two isolated, quickly contained oil spills during recent road construction and truck incidents. The spills were cleaned up after initial testing and EPA involvement; EMA described both as isolated and not causing ongoing contamination.

Commissioners asked EMA to pursue cost estimates for a siren replacement or overhaul, to coordinate with local fire chiefs and to continue preparations for tornado season. No immediate grant or replacement funding was approved at the meeting; EMA said it will return with estimates and recommendations for funding or repairs.

Next steps: EMA to obtain vendor estimates for a siren overhaul and return to the board with a recommended approach and costs.
