Haslet’s council voted April 6 to ask the Planning & Zoning commission to hold a series of workshops to review and update the city’s master land‑use plan and zoning map.
Planning staff described a rule of thumb of roughly two acres of commercial land per 100 residents and said that for an 8,000-person projection the city would need about 160 acres of commercial land; staff reported the city currently lists roughly 184 acres of viable commercial land and about 480 acres of industrial land. Staff cautioned that reclassifying land can affect property owners who relied on the existing plan when making investments.
Council members emphasized corridor-focused commercial development (major intersections such as Blue Mountain Road and FM 156, Westport/Harmon and the Haslet Parkway corridors) rather than ad hoc mid‑block changes. Members also suggested P&Z invite Hillwood (regional developer) and the City of Fort Worth to workshops; council unanimously approved the motion with that outreach direction.
Next steps: P&Z will plan workshops, invite stakeholders, and return recommendations to council for any ordinance amendments. Councilors asked staff to prepare maps and potential rezoning scenarios for discussion.
