The Bandon SD 54 board voted to appoint Brianna Hutchins to fill the vacant position six and chose to table selection for position seven until the June meeting to allow an absent member to participate.
Board members described Hutchins as an active community volunteer and fundraiser who has supported district activities and advocacy. A board member moved and the board voted to appoint her; the motion passed with recorded assent.
Three applicants addressed the board in person. Mitch Vincent described local roots and community involvement, saying, "I'm Mitch Vincent I have two boys at school" and discussed experience in local volunteer roles. John Sullivan described his financial-adviser background and prior PTO and bond-budget work and answered questions about district challenges and priorities.
Board discussion on the second vacancy produced an even split of support for the remaining candidates. Because one board member was absent and could serve as a tiebreaker, the board voted to table the appointment of position seven until the June meeting and encouraged the candidates to use the interim to meet with individual board members.
The board also encouraged community members to apply for committee roles if they wished to be involved. The district will reconvene in June to consider the remaining application and make a final appointment for position seven.
