The Santa Rosa City Council opened its Spanish-language session with three proclamations recognizing April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Fair Housing Month and Muslim-American Appreciation Month, city officials said.
Casa representatives spoke after the council proclaimed child-abuse prevention month, thanking the city and noting that the organization serves more than 3,000 local children, a Casa representative said. "Estamos muy orgullosos de servir con casa porque ellos sirven a más de 3,000 niños de la comunidad," the representative said, thanking council members for the recognition.
The council also proclaimed April as Fair Housing Month; a fair-housing advocate reminded the council that federal protections date to 1968 and urged vigilance against current threats to housing rights. "Esta ley se pasó en 1968 ... para poder combatir la discriminación de la vivienda," the advocacy coordinator said.
Council members recognized April as Muslim-American Appreciation Month and invited a representative of the local Islamic center to speak. The representative thanked the city for the recognition and said the community is "muy temerosa" amid immigration concerns but grateful for the city
cknowledgment.
Between proclamations, staff invited the public to community events: Jennifer Nasel, sustainability coordinator, outlined an Earth Day festival scheduled for April 25 with family activities, arts groups, a bike collection and free transit connections. Nasel told council members the event expected roughly 2,000 attendees and listed participating departments, adding details are on the city's website.
The proclamations were ceremonial; no policy actions were taken on these items. A small number of public commenters spoke during the proclamation period and at other times in the meeting to thank the council and raise local concerns. The council paused for photos after the proclamations and then resumed its regular agenda.
