The Minneapolis Planning Commission adopted its consent agenda on April 6, approving several staff recommendations including a proposal to rename the stretch of Blaisdell Avenue between West Franklin Avenue and West 22nd Street to Officer Jamal Mitchell Way.
Aileen Johnson, founder and president of the Minneapolis Police Honor Guard and Color Guard Foundation, spoke in favor of the renaming and asked the commission to "honor the sacrifice" of Officer Jamal Mitchell, who was killed while attempting to render aid. "He left behind his life partner Tori and four children," Johnson said, urging the commission to approve the designation to acknowledge the family's loss.
Chair Chris Meyer said the consent motion passed by voice vote; the commission also adopted the March 16 minutes earlier in the meeting and voted to continue item 6 to the next cycle while keeping its public hearing open for anyone who wishes to speak at a later meeting.
The clerk offered to connect resident commenters with staff for referrals and more information. The Planning Commission's next regular meeting was set for April 20.
